Over more than two decades in Calgary’s residential construction industry, Jeff Melanson learned the business from the ground up. Working across a variety of roles gave him firsthand experience in nearly every aspect of building a home. In 2016, he decided to take the leap, drawing on that experience to create something of his own.
“Bambi-eyed and naïve, I said, ‘let’s start a company’. It was humble beginnings to say the least,” says Jeff Melanson, CEO of Melanson Homes.
His wife, Leslie-Ann, was working in oil and gas and helped manage the fledgling company on evenings and weekends. Their first job was a small basement framing project in Auburn Bay. The client, impressed with Jeff’s work, brought him back to finish the rest of the project, and word of mouth soon kept the couple busy throughout the neighbourhood.
Those early projects helped cover startup costs including a van and additional tools that allowed Jeff to take on bigger projects. The company grew, as did the Melanson family, and the couple welcomed their first child amid the demands of building a business. Before long they hired their first field employee, purchased a second van and outgrew their home office. Leslie-Ann left her job to focus on the business full-time, and together they established a beautiful office space showcasing what Melanson Homes does best: creating quality, custom spaces designed to exceed expectations.
From the beginning, the Melansons wanted to set themselves apart in the renovation industry through quality craftsmanship, reliability and a highly personalized client experience. They built relationships with clients as partnerships rather than transactions and surrounded themselves with skilled professionals who contributed their vast expertise to each project, whether a custom new-home build, whole-home gut renovation, complete rebuild or addition. Their team and trade partners are exceptional, which gives Jeff the confidence to focus on growing the business.
“We’ve built a really strong team of people I trust to manage our projects and take great care of our clients,” says Jeff. “That allows me to stay connected to our projects and accessible to our clients while also focusing on the bigger picture of running and continuing to grow our company. I think that’s one of the things that sets us apart. We have the team, systems and processes in place to deliver a consistently high level of quality and service.”
The Melansons’ relationships with clients often continue long after the crews have packed up. They enjoy running into former clients, hearing how they love their space and meeting children who weren’t even born when Jeff designed their nurseries and bedrooms. That connection translates into referrals and repeat business, which makes up almost half of Melanson Homes’ projects. It also reflects the company’s belief that every home should be built to a standard their team members would be proud to call their own.
Much of that positive experience originates with involving clients from the first meeting. They guide clients through every stage of the process, ensuring the design reflects expectations before construction begins.
“We go through the entire process of design and preconstruction, and we’re really building the project on paper first,” Jeff says. “We’re very detailed in our specifications and plans and how all the pieces are going to come together. Then, when we move into production, we have clear expectations and a detailed schedule to guide how the project is going to be executed.”
The team uses construction software to track projects, report daily and weekly progress and flag upcoming targets, giving clients greater visibility while keeping the team organized, aligned and on schedule.
That same emphasis on teamwork extends beyond the systems the company has put in place. The Melansons have built a cohesive, knowledgeable team with high morale and low turnover – something they believe translates directly into great customer service and consistently glowing client reviews. It has also earned the company a Consumer Choice Award for custom home building and numerous industry awards, including five from the Calgary Inner City Builders Association last year for projects ranging from new home builds and backyard suites to extensive renovations.
For the Melansons, however, the recognition is a reflection of the work rather than the goal. A high-quality finished product is the baseline; what sets the company apart is the experience and guidance the company provides throughout the process of building or renovating their clients’ dream space.
“Our driving force is to be a good, well-run company that provides our clients with excellent service and communication and delivers the highest-quality project we can build for them,” says Leslie-Ann Melanson, creative director at Melanson Homes.
That commitment to quality also led to a new venture. In 2022, the Melansons launched Ellie Cabinet Co. to better utilize a highly experienced cabinetmaker on their team. While operating independently from Melanson Homes, Ellie gives Melanson Homes direct access to high-end custom cabinetry guaranteed to meet its stringent standards.
Across both companies, the team has grown to 19 employees supported by a group of talented trade partners. The Melansons have worked hard to find the right people for each position and create a workplace where employees feel valued and enjoy what they do. That culture matters in an industry where retaining skilled people can be challenging, and it has helped the companies maintain the exceptional level of service that clients have come to expect while taking on increasingly complex projects.
“Our team is super important to us. They are such a huge part of our business. We couldn’t do the scale and quality of the projects or provide the high level of customer service we want to present without them,” says Leslie-Ann. “We’re all working towards the same goal and it’s nice to be in a boat where we’re all rowing in the same direction.”
After 10 years in business, that direction is decidedly forward. The Melansons have built a company designed not only to weather the inevitable fluctuations in the market but to keep evolving through them. They continue to look for ways to improve, embrace innovation and take on new challenges.
A decade in business is a milestone worth celebrating, but Jeff and Leslie-Ann are already focused on what comes next.
“Everyone was saying, ‘Congratulations. It’s amazing. Way to go!’” says Jeff. “But the way I look at it is we’re just getting started.”
