When Jalen Giroux worked her way through university, she received more than experience and a paycheck; she found an industry and a company that she was passionate about. As a summer student in 2014, she enjoyed the positive culture and interesting work at Jones Geomatics and obtained her Alberta land surveyor designation after graduation.
“Kevin Jones founded the company in 1999 with three employees and we’ve grown into a medium-sized firm over the last 25 years. I started out at the lowest level as a summer student and obviously I liked it; I became the owner in 2022,” says Jalen Giroux, president of Jones Geomatics.
As the founder sidles toward retirement, Giroux and the team of 25 in the office and field are ready to build on his foundation of teamwork, integrity and service to best support the company’s long-time clients. Jones Geomatics has become a trusted partner for land developers and urban planners, lawyers, real estate agents, engineering and architectural firms, home builders and private land owners, and it does extensive work with municipalities and government organizations across southern Alberta.
Over the years, Jones Geomatics has been part of many important projects that range from large-scale utility right-of-way plans surrounding the Stoney Trail ring road to registering subdivisions for the multi-phase Bridges of Langdon development; from projects on Canadian lands like National Parks and First Nations reserves to resurveying lots from the 1960s on Chestermere Lake to incorporate the area just beyond the docks to address liability issues.
The company’s work is varied but given the long-tenured staff at Jones Geomatics, there is sure to be someone who has seen and done whatever the clients may need. They are experts in municipal subdivision and condominium surveys, real property reports, road plans, construction layouts, topographic surveys, property line determination and right-of-way plans.
“We have numerous employees that have worked here over 10 years, so we have a lot of knowledge from their experience as well which allows us to better assist our clients,” says Giroux.
The diversity and strength of the staff is key to the success and longevity of the business. Armed with exceptional communication and the latest technology and programs, the team provides quality land survey and geomatics services to clients. Each employee has their role but they rely on each other’s expertise to ensure they are providing the best outcome for clients every day. The seasoned industry professionals are happy to share their knowledge with students and those just starting out and this mentoring creates an incredible, collaborative culture while setting the company up for continued success.
“We’ve been lucky to find good people who have stuck around,” says Kevin Jones, founder of Jones Geomatics. “We strive to form good relationships with people and do our best to support our staff and help them grow.”
The team is dedicated to helping grow the industry as well. Giroux presents to SAIT and U of C geomatics students to show them real-world applications of their studies while attracting new people to the company. She is also on the BILD Calgary Urban Redevelopment Committee and the Alberta Land Surveyors Registration Committee while others in the company sit on a handful of boards and committees to support the industry. This involvement is key to a strong profession and supports the next generation of surveyors.
As Jones gives a hand to that next generation to take over, he can’t help but look back to the beginning.
“I started out running on a fear of failure, and there was a bit of luck involved too. It was nice to build momentum and carry that forward for 25 years,” says Jones.
This longevity speaks to the quality work and high service standards he has instilled in the company and while the team is taking this opportunity to look back at 25 years in business and celebrate the vendors, clients and employees who got them here, they are keeping their eyes fixed on Jones Geomatics’ bright future.
“It’s been great to last this long,” he says. “And with Jalen as the new owner, it will surely carry on for another 25 years.”
