Phil Hubbard started the company in his basement with little more than some tools, a telephone and a strong drive to succeed. He worked long hours and wore many hats in those early years as he established himself in the Calgary market.
“I did it all – all the sales, all the installs, all the administration for a couple years,” says Phil Hubbard, founder of Hubbard Roofing & Exteriors. “My wife joined in 1987 and she took on the administration and I hired my brothers and put them to work. We kept everybody busy.”
As Phil worked his way through many south-end neighbourhoods, the company grew substantially through word-of-mouth. Even as Hubbard Roofing became an industry leader, Phil never forgot its humble beginnings or the importance of protecting the reputation he so painstakingly built. That means never cutting corners, always showing up when he said he would and making sure to deliver a quality exterior he could be proud of. This approach wasn’t common in the industry, and the more houses they roofed, the more calls they got from neighbours on the street or from friends of their customers following up on a trusted referral.
His booming business eventually forced Phil out of the basement office and into larger and larger shop spaces before landing in their current location on 40 Street SE. From this headquarters, the second generation of Hubbard professionals manages a dedicated group of 57, including employees, contractors and crews. After his retirement in 2014, his children fully took over the reins of the operation; Phil’s daughter Sarah Hubbard is the Chief Operating Officer, daughter Jessy Yasinski is the Marketing and Production Manager and son Don Hubbard is the Chief of Sales for Hubbard Roofing & Exteriors.
“We have a real family bond,” says Don. “Our Dad laid down a great foundation and we were able to build off that together and take it to the next level over the last 10 years.”
That next level is an impressive one. Hubbard completes about 500 jobs per year where they renovate, repair, replace or maintain some or all elements of the exterior envelope, from soffits, eaves and siding to fascia, skylights and roofs. The team is also very knowledgeable about ventilation and helps find solutions to the problem of attic rain that predominantly plagues newer homes. In a cold snap, if there’s not adequate ventilation, moisture inside the house rises into the attic, freezes and then melts when temperatures rise again. This creates something akin to rain in the attic, destroying insulation, ceilings and pot lights. Hubbard works with homeowners, often at no charge, to add proper ventilation to help prevent this issue.
From the beginning, Phil and his team have gone above and beyond for people in the community, whether that’s supporting charities like Made by Momma and Meals on Wheels or helping someone who was scammed by an unscrupulous roofing company to get the services they need. After all, it’s their name attached to every job, so the Hubbards want every interaction to be a positive one. They stand strongly behind their work, even once the workmanship warranty has expired, and taking care of the client has been the main priority of Hubbard Roofing since 1985.
“This milestone of being in business 40 years is important to us. It’s our legacy. It’s our name. There’s a lot of pride there,” says Jessy.
There is also pride in being a successful family-owned business that Calgarians can rely on. Hubbard is a long-standing, reputable roofing company operating among a plethora of fly-by-night contractors. These crews swoop in after a catastrophic hailstorm, take advantage of the glut of work, do a shoddy job and disappear, leaving homeowners on the hook for repairs on their repairs. The Hubbard team regularly fields calls from people who went with the lowest quote or quickest turn-around and are now left with a failed roof that they want Hubbard to redo properly. With its proven track record as a licensed, bonded, insured and very skilled company, these customers all wish they had gone with Hubbard out of the gate. And most importantly, before, during and long after a job, the team continues to answer the phone and respond to emails; Hubbard Roofing is not going anywhere.
It is not going anywhere else either. The Hubbards have been approached to franchise the company in different markets across the country, but they always decline. They prefer to focus on growing their exceptional service in their own market where they can personally ensure the company’s high standards are continually met. But that doesn’t mean the company is static.
“There is room to grow for sure, with the right people. We could do more volume but we just need to ensure we have the proper crews in place,” says Sarah.
They are careful about who they bring on board, so growth will only happen if the quality and service standards can be upheld. Until then, the Hubbard family is happy to continue to be the gold standard for roofing and exterior renovations in Calgary, proving that after 40 years, customer service, expertise and a commitment to excellence never go out of style.
